Not ALL internet drama is bad, people.

Not so bad, eh? It would be a lot better if we could have gotten the blog inside the actual money-generating website, or had maintained uptime all during the readership onslaught, but that part was sadly out of my hands and I was strictly forbidden to use the cat o’ nine tails on the two web hosts involved. And their servers. WP Supercache, people! WP SUPERCACHE if you’re not hosted at WordPress.com (and if you are, no sweat. This post got something like 145 million hits in the first 48 hours and didn’t go down; and yes, that’s free hosting).

This all came about because Nancy hired me to help her maximize her online presence and draw potential clients to her website, YourMoneyByDesign, where she has an affordable, helpful online programfor people who want to learn how to handle their personal finances better. Full disclosure: my sister only let me take the job in Yellowknife on condition I sign up for the program!

One of the suggestions I made was to do guest blogging on some female-dominated, popular websites, and I was able to hook her up with one of my favorite people, Crabby Golightly, who has an extremely popular, magazine-style site for women which sometimes features in Google News, which is huge. Nancy started contributing a blog post on the intersection of money and popular culture once a week and after a couple of months, BAM!

Now, there are several reasons this worked out: Nancy was a good fit in terms of writing style, the cultural references kept the financial column from being too dry for an entertainment site, and the readership can identify with Nancy; she’s personable and probably not a million miles away from being one of the readers. Consistency, congruency, and quality are the key to getting good columns and/or guest blogging gigs: the blog editor needs to know you’ll blog well, on time, and on something the readership will want to read, and for bonus points, you’ll be linkbait.

Mission? Accomplished.
