Speaking at Social Media Week

I know you haven't seen much of me lately

It’s true, Vancouver hasn’t seen much of me lately, but that’s about to change.

This Sunday I’ll be hauling myself out to the airport for 4 FREAKING 30 in the GODDAM MORNING to catch a plane which will, by way of Ye Olde Milke Runne, get me to Vancouver for 8 FREAKING 50 in the GODDAM NIGHT, with bonus seven hour layover in Kamloops, which airport is in the middle of buttfuck nowhere, but enough of that. Suffice it to say I’m coming back specifically to speak at Social Media Week, and here are the deets on where and when:

Starting out the week at the Blogging Technology Panel at UBC Robson Square on Monday:

Blogging Technology Panel – The Good the Bad and the Ugly

In the beginning there was Blogger. Today Blogger might not be cutting edge, but it’s still going strong, but Blogger isn’t alone in the blogging technology world. So what do you choose? Blogger? WordPress? WordPress.com? Typepad? Drupal? Tumblr? Posterous? Google+? Bringing together Vancouver’s leading bloggers we hash out the pros and cons of the major platforms and maybe a little prognosticating about the future of blogging tech.

The Guerrilla Mashup is on Tuesday at the ING Cafe. For those of you who don’t know, I was Shane Gibson’s editorial assistant on Guerrilla Social Media Marketing, and it was a blast (although I don’t usually like to pull three all-nighters in a row: only for you, Shane, only for you).

And on Wednesday I’ll be at the Social Good Summit organized by Dave MacDonald at UBC Robson Square: emceeing the Roundup at 3:15pm:

The Social Good Summit is bringing together people who have consistently used social media to build communities around sustainability, culture and non-profits various charities. Every one of our speakers has a dual background as a social media user and professional from entrepreneurship, marketing, accounting and business administration so we expect the audience to have some excellent take-aways from the talks as well as the panel that we will close the day with.

Our speakers are:

Ben Johnson, CMA – @mrbenjohnson – Ben is actively involved in marketing, both online and offline at organizations such as Union Gospel Mission, OpenMedia.ca and the Our Place Society in Victoria. We’re looking forward to Ben teaching us how social media can be used as an key component of overall marketing, financial and social strategies.

Melissa Dingmon, MBA – @sustainableMBA – Melissa is a graduate of the Washington State’s Bainbridge Institute, one of the premier sustainability-oriented business programs in North America. Her speaking and consulting centre upon “Social Media for Social Change” and really get to the heart of how organizations can affect real change using social media tools. Visiting us from Washington State, Melissa will tie together many of the ideas of other speakers and open the door for audience members to think about social media strategies on their own terms.

Katie Jeanes – @alittlemoregood – Katie made a big splash in 2011 with the official launch of A Little More Good, a company that offers people the opportunity to connect with local initiatives, organizations and causes and break down barriers to getting involved. After significant growth over the past year, Katie is rapidly expanding A Little More Good’s presence and relies heavily on social media to spread the word. A Little More Good could not do its work or grow as it has without social media and Katie will be giving us a glimpse into how she does this.

Richard Loat – @fiveholeforfood – Richard just wrapped up the second year of touring across Canada with Five Hole For Food, an organization he founded that combines his love of hockey with his passion for feeding the hungry. FHFF has successfully contributed to food banks all across the country throughout June and July – two months where demand is at its highest with children are out of school and donations are typically at their lowest. FHFF has grown exclusively using social media from generating new partner cities to building the original team right here in Vancouver. A marketing consultant with organizations such as Cap Gemeni, Richard will be sharing his story and explaining how social media integrated with his overall strategy to make for an incredible national campaign in a very short period of time.

Ajay Puri – @masalapuri – Over the last several years Ajay has co-founded and continues to co-lead many initiatives including: Coop Culture, an online platform for enriching the dialogue on multiculturalism; Rangi Changi Roots, formed a non-profit society which seeks to bridge the multicultural communities and the green movement; Bridge to a Cool Planet, a coalition of over 30 multicultural, green and social justice groups which in 2009 hosted the world’s largest 350.org Climate Action Day with over 10,000+ attendees; and East Of Main, a site sharing community stories and events from the culturally diverse area of East Vancouver. He could not do these things without using social media tools and he will be sharing how to build communities across many cultures, both online and offline, using social media tools.

Lorraine Murphy – @raincoaster – Lorraine will be moderating our panel of speakers during a Q&A to close the day. Her work as as social media educator in both Yellowknife and Vancouver’s lower eastside have been a source of empowerment and community development for years. As a key member of Vancouver’s social media community, we look forward to Lorraine helping our audience bring together all of our speakers’ expertise to develop some awesome takeaways during the Summit.
