Love

From a SEARCHgrad email. I don’t post most of the volunteer “opportunities” I get, because mostly they’re just a chance to work for free and thus reinforce the class system (welfare recipients are not technically allowed to volunteer, as it takes away from their work search time. They are thus unable to accept most internships, etc, which are prerequisites to success in certain fields) but this is a low-pressure way to participate in and be the subject of, art, so here it is. Oh, and you get a copy of your portrait, so there IS payment of a kind.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
Vancouver photographer looking for volunteers to participate in portrait sessions for a gallery project titled “Love Is A Many Splendored Thing”. This video installation will be exhibited December 8 – 24, 2009 at Pendulum Gallery, 885 West Georgia Street.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

To photograph 200+ people of all ages and backgrounds expressing each of the words of the title “Love Is a Many Splendored Thing” in sign language. Therefore, each person would take one to four portraits for each language sign. The portraits will be projected simultaneously on six screens, one screen for each word.

The goal of this project is to bring a piece of good news into the world we live in, a world bombarded with messages and expressions of hatred and fear, messages so overwhelming that we often forget the very essence of our existence, one simple truth that applies to anyone and everyone, no matter who they are and where they come from. That simple but most important truth is: “Love is A Many Splendored Thing”. Although the title of this project is borrowed from the movie and the song released originally in 1955 by Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation, the project is not affiliated with this motion picture. The appropriate license to use the title has already been acquired from Twentieth Century Fox in writing.

Your participation in this project would be truly appreciated. As outlined in the project description, each portrait session will only take 20 – 30 minutes. The pictures will be taken in a professional photography studio. Each participant will be required to sign a model release and will receive their pictures in electronic format after the show.
