Oh! How I love this painting! Remedios Varo was a Spanish Surrealist painter who moved to Mexico and became one of the most important artists in the country, although still largely and undeservedly in the shadow of Frida Kahlo.
This is one of her best: Woman Leaving the Psychoanalyst’s Office. Varo explained that, as the woman leaves she drops the ghost of her father into the well. A layer of her veil falls away. She’s still carrying a basketload of old crap, but it’s one item lighter now.
If this image calls to you, there are many more to be found on Janushead.

This image definitely calls to me. It’s wonderful and Varo is absolutely … awesome (there is no word I can put here).

Glad you like it. For me, the “don’t mess with me” look in her eyes says that the process is doing her some good. I find this image very freeing.

Thank you for posting this. I found it when I did a Google search for the painting. I saw it last month at LACMA at the “In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women” exhibit. I admired the painting very much and now understand it a bit better with your blog post. Thanks!

Thank you for telling me. It’s at LACMA? God, LACMA is wonderful. I’ve never seen any of her paintings in person, but would love to.

I believe it’s in a museum in Mexico, but I’m not sure.
