Position Type: Full Time Date Ad Posted: 8/6/2009
Job Region: BC – Vancouver & Lower Mainland Application Deadline: 8/17/2009

The Human Security Report Project (HSRP) is seeking a highly motivated individual to manage the production, dissemination, and future development of its e-resources.

We are looking for someone who has an interest and background in international affairs, is enthusiastic about information management and delivery, and has a high-level understanding of the latest web-based technologies.

About the HSRP

The HSRP is an independent research centre, funded by the governments of Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK, that tracks trends in political violence around the world, their causes and consequences. It seeks to contribute to the formulation of evidence-based security policies by providing reliable data and informed analysis. The HSRP is affiliated with Simon Fraser University and is located at the university’s downtown campus in Vancouver, Canada.

The HSRP’s flagship publication, the Human Security Report, and the complementary Human Security Brief series, are widely cited in the media and in the academic and policy worlds. However, its reputation for providing timely information on human security-related issues and research from around the world also derives from its web and email-based resources–collectively referred to as the HSRP’s e-resources (http://www.hsrgroup.org/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=413).

These e-resources include:

• Human Security Research;
• Human Security News;
• Afghanistan Security News;
• The Human Security Gateway; and
• The Afghanistan Conflict Monitor

These resources constitute an important source of information for policy-makers (in governments and international organizations), those involved in the delivery of development and humanitarian assistance, the media, researchers, students, and the interested public.

The Responsibilities of the Manager, E-Resources include:

• Identifying issues that are likely to be of interest to the target readership;
• Keeping abreast of key debates in the field;
• Coordinating a team of 3-5 research assistants who are responsible for compiling, publishing, and distributing the HSRP’s e-resources, and ensuring that the highest editorial standards are met;
• Conceiving innovative ways of displaying information, including data;
• Identifying potential for technical upgrades to improve service delivery and the user interface.

As a senior HSRP staff member, the appointee will work closely with the Director and Executive Director on outreach strategies and the development and expansion of the e-resource section.

Experience and Qualifications

The appointee will likely have:

• A master’s degree in international relations, political science or a related discipline;
• A keen interest in research on issues related to global security – from the causes of civil war to the effectiveness of peacekeeping;
• A strong interest in web technologies, and techniques for the organization and display of information;
• Ability to manage both technical and non-technical details for web projects;
• Familiarity with web design software (e.g., CSS, XML, Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe InDesign and Notepad++) and content management systems (e.g. SiteFinity, Mambo, Drupal);
• Familiarity with blogging platforms and widgets (e.g. Blogger, WordPress, TypePad), as well as web publishing products and trends;
• Experience managing staff and building teams;
• Confidence in establishing and maintaining relationships with external vendors, through email, phone, and/or face-to-face meetings;
• Excellent written and oral communication skills; and
• High editorial standards and consistent and meticulous attention to detail.

The HSRP seeks to fill this position as soon as possible. The position is full-time and salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
